This week in ELA, one of the most important things we learned was the subjunctive mood. the subjunctive mood of a verb can express a wish or desire, or a condition that is contrary to the fact. Usually in these sentence cases,"were is used instead of "was, and "would" is often used instead of "will" as well. One example of a wish or desire in subjunctive mood is "I wish were here." The verb that is in subjunctive mood in the sentence is "were". In contrary-to-fact condition, the sentence "If I were a better soccer player, I'd join the team." Just like in the sentence that shows wish or desire, the verb in subjunctive mood is also "were". In these to sentences "were" is used rather than "was". Contrary-to-fact condition can also be used to recommend or demand after the word "that". Another thing that it can be used as is to show uncertainty after the words "if" or "whether". For example, when the mood is subjunctive for a demand after the word "that" the subjunctive verb in the sentence, "I must insist that Victor be at the meeting." is "be". On the other hand when the subjunctive mood is being used as a recommendation after the word "that", the subjunctive verb in the sentence, "I recommend that Audrey report our group's conclusion." is "report". When it is used in the case of uncertainty; "Whether he be right or wrong, Paul is always coming up with ideas." the subjunctive verb is "be". This is only one of many things that we learned this week in ELA class.

In 1911 geoscientist named Griffith Taylor's discover an amazing thing in nature. He discovered what he named Antarctica's Blood Falls. More than one hundred years later, someone has finally figured out why Blood Falls is red. In McMurdo Dry Valleys, there is a rust-colored liquid that runs out of the Taylor Glacier. This rust-colored liquid has not yet been identified, but there are several beliefs of why such an interesting color is flowing out of a glacier. One popular belief of many people is that when there is any red algae in the area frozen in the snow and ice, it makes this area appear to have a red tint. Although so many people believed this was the case, a new study was recently published by "The Journal of Glaciology". They were able to discover what makes the falls are red, as well as the reason they look red. By using radio echo sounding, which is also an ice-penetrating radar, researchers from University of Alaska Fairbanks and Colorado College were able to map the things that lay underneath the surface of the Taylor Glacier. What they found was astonishing. There was "a complex network of subglacial rivers and a subglacial lake" according to BDG Media. These rivers and lake contained brine that were very high in iron, which caused the red tint. It is not until the salty, iron-rich water flows out of the glacier and makes contact with the air that the red color is made. Ever when the falls don't flow, there is still a rust color on them. In conclusion, after a lot of research and time, scientists were finally able to discover what caused the Blood Falls bleed this red liquid.
This week in ELA class we learned about simple, progressive, and perfect tenses. I also learned about filming. Verb forms indicate tense, or the time of action. Simple tenses are present tense, the past tense, and the future tense. Progressive tenses are made up of the auxiliary verb "be" and the present participle (-ing ending) of the main verb. An example of the present progressive is, "Adam is playing soccer with some of his closest friends". The past progressive would be, "Adam was playing soccer with some of his closest friends". And finally the future progressive is, "Adam will be playing soccer with some of his closest friends". Perfect tense consists of a form of the auxiliary verb "have", and the part participle of the main verb. An example of a present perfect tense is, "Mateo has eaten a cupcake every day for the past two weeks". The past perfect tense is, "Mateo had eaten a cupcake everyday for the past two weeks". And the future perfect tense is, "Mateo will have eaten a cupcake by 5 PM today" In the perfect tenses, the passive tense is formed by inserting the word "been". For example, "The cat has been groomed, by the annoying boy". The part about filming that I learned was a few new cool tricks on iMovie. I learned these cool tricks on Wednesday when I was working on my film about staying strong with my group for "Making Movies that Matter". This is what I learned this week in ELA class.
This week in ELA, we learned about verbs, specifically linking verbs and troublesome verbs. A linking verb joins A subject with the subject complement. A subject complement renames the subject. Common linking verbs are am, is, are, was, were, will be, has been, and had been. Other common linking verbs include appear, become, feel, grow, look, remain, see, smell, taste, stay, and turn. Some verbs can be action or linking. For example, in the sentence, "She felt tired after working in the garden", the verb is felt and it is a linking verb. The subject complement is tired and it complements she. In the next sentence, "She felt the heat of the sun while working", the verb is also felt, but this time it is an action verb. Any linking verb can be substituted with a to be verb. A troublesome verb is a verb that is often confused with another verb. Some examples of trouble some verbs are, lie and lay, rise and raise, let and leave, sit and set, teach and learn, and borrow and lend. Lie means to rest or recline, while lay means to put of place something down. Lie is intransitive but lay is transitive. Rise means to ascend or move up and raise means to lift up or elevate. Rise is intransitive and raise is transitive. Let means to permit, while leave means to abandon or to depart from. These words can both be either transitive or intransitive. Sit means to have or keep a seat and set means to put or place. Sit is intransitive, while set is transitive. Teach means to give instruction, while learn means to receive instruction/knowledge. Borrow means to obtain the use of something from another person and lend means to give another person something to use for a time. All for of these words can be either transitive or intransitive. This is what I learned in ELA class this week.
Alexa Scimeca Knierim is a figure skater whom had terrible pain in her abdomen. She always was vomited and spent many nights without sleep. During this terrible pain, figure skating was rarely on her mind. Instead she had to focus on her terrible pain. When she got married, she even felt a ton of pain. The first time that she stepped on the ice, her husband had to take great care of her, and she would have to go home and rest shortly after. Many long months later, a doctor diagnosed her correctly after about ten doctors failed to diagnose her right. She had three abdominal surgeries. Two of these surgeries were in August and one was in November due to complications during previous surgeries. After Alexa Scimeca Knierim was able to compete again she had to have a lot of time to recover from her surgeries. She and her husband slowly began to work themselves closer and close to a "world class level". It has been an extremely time since the couple last competed, and they had to withdraw from so many events that were taking place. After a while, they had a debut in four different continents. By doing this, they were able to show everyone how talented they were and that nothing could stop them. They were once on America's top pairs team and were added to the United States roster for the weeks ever in Finland. In conclusion, even though Alexa Scimeca Knierim went through a lot of pain physically, she was able to keep working hard and end up in a better place than ever.
.This week in ELA, I learned about irregular verbs. Verbs show state of being or action. There are three principle parts of a verb, but we often include a fourth. One example of a sentence with a verb, prepositional phrase, and state of being word is "Greg LeMond was he first American cyclist to win the competition." The verb in the sentence is "was" and the prepositional phrase is "to win". Was is a to be verb, which is also the state of being. For example, with the word play, the base word is play, the past tense of the base word is played. The past particle contains either have or had before it, so the past participle of play is "have played" or "has played". Three other irregular verbs are do, eat, and swim. The past tense of do is does. The past tense of eat is ate. Lastly the past tense of swim is swam. The past participle of do is have or had done. The past participle of eat is have or had eaten. And the past participle of swim is swum. Finally the present participle of do is done. The present participle of eat is eaten. And the present participle of swim is swimming. A verb phrase is two or more words that work together as a unit. A verb phrase may have one or more auxiliary verbs and a main verb. For example, "Have you begun your report?" The verb phrase is "Have begun". The auxiliary verb is "have". Common auxiliary verbs are be and have and their various forms; as well as do, did, can, may, might, should, could, and will. This week in ELA, I learned and practices more about pronouns. While my class was doing the actual lessons, I was extremely confused while we were learning them. Now that it is the end of the pronoun chapter and we had to take a test, I learned and understood different things about pronouns a lot better than before. In the first lesson, I learned about the person, number and gender of pronouns. It was a little bit difficult for me to remember all of the singular and plural forms of the pronouns. For example, I, me, you, he, she, it, him, and her are all personal pronouns that are singular. We, us, you, they, and them are plural. In lessons two and three, I learned about subject and object pronouns. Some subject pronouns include, I, we, you, he, she, it, and they. Some object pronouns are me, us, you, him, her, it, and them. In the next lesson we learned about pronouns after than or as. These words are used as comparisons. They conjugations join two clauses; sometimes the second part is omitted. In the fifth lesson, I leaned about possessive pronouns and adjectives. Singular possessive pronouns include mine, yours, his, hers, its, ours, yours, and theirs. Possessive adjectives include my, our, your, his, her, its, and their. Intensive pronouns are used to emphasize and reflexive pronouns are used as the direct object of a verb or object of a preposition. In lesson seven we learned about antecedents. The antecedent and the pronoun must agree in gender, number, and person. In the next lesson, I learned about Interrogative and Demonstrative pronouns. Interrogative pronoun include who, whom, whose, which, and what. Demonstrate pronouns are this, that, these, those. In lesson nine, a relative pronoun is used to join a dependent clause and its antecedent. In the last lesson, I learned about indefinite pronouns. Some of these include, another, anybody, anyone, each, no one, nobody, both, more, and most. This is what I learned in ELA class this week.
This week in ELA we learned about ethos, pathos and logos, but this blog is only about ethos and pathos. First of all, Rhetoric is the art of persuasion. The three ways to persuade someone are ethos, pathos, and logos. These three words originated in Greece. Aristotle was a Greek philosopher who studied persuasion. The first one is moral character, the second is hearing into a certain frame and using things that apply to you, and the last one is actual speech and proof. Ethos is and ethical or moral way of persuading someone. The word ethical has the Greek root word, "eth" which is also in the word ethos. It's ways of persuading someone is by using credibility, believability, and the likability. If ethos is used inside the text, it is called intrinsic. If it is used outside text, it is called extrinsic. The speaker must demonstrate credibility to the audience in or for it to be considered ethos persuasion. Two more words that have the root word "eth" are ethical and ethics. These words relate to ethos in many different ways. Experience often ties in with the ethos persuasion method. The second persuasion method is pathos. Pathos is when stories, scenarios, or stamens are used to make you emotional about the thing they are advertising. This causes the audience to make an emotional decision. Some ways that you may be persuaded are by fear, love, patriotism, hatred, joy, humor, or guilt. Pathos is usually extremely effective and manipulated. A few words that have the Greek root word "path" in them are empathy, sympathy, pathetic, and antipathy. All these words have the same root as Pathos. Both word and pictures are used to persuade people. In conclusion, ethos and pathos and two very different, but also great ways of persuasion.
Just recently, a meteor flew over several states in the Midwest. There were tons of authorities outside reporting a meteor overhead. The gigantic fireball in the sky was visible for close to fifteen minutes, and was first seen around 10:00 PM. It was first seen just west of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. "The fireball was seen over the northern sky, moving from west to east," said the NWS in the area. Some states in this area include Iowa and Illinois. The meteor broke into many small pieces and than eventually was not in sight anymore. There were many reports of a "Boom" sound combing from areas that were north of Highway 20. Along with the reported booms, many people also complained that they felt and saw their homes, nearby trees, and other objects, including wind chimes, shaking due to the meteor. CNN says that the meteor was seen across many parts of Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Wisconsin. Quad Cities weather service got parts of the smoke trail made by the meteor on camera. It was mostly described as a "thin line extending across portions of Grant an Iowa Counties in Wisconsin". There is no official cause to the meteor flying over this area, but there are still many people trying to determine the cause. It is said that there is a meteor shower that often occurs in this area of the United States, from around April 4 to April 21, so many people are already expecting that in their area. It is unknown if any parts of the meteor hit the ground, but some people have an idea of where it could've landed. A meteor appears in the Earth's atmosphere when a meteoroid, a particle, chunk of metal or stony matter enters the atmosphere. In conclusion, this meteor shower was an amazing experience and thankfully no one or their property was damaged.
